Hello Friends,

We have DELL MD3420 Power vault device with 2 SSD and 4 HDD. We've got an error message saying " Virtual disk not on preferred path". Can anyone please explain what is it ?

Found below recovery step on the internet,

Redistribute virtual disks manually can fix this issue.

My doubt is that, this storage device has database running 24x7. Doing above recommandation wont distrub my database ? Whether any downtime or restart required if i Redistribute virtual disks manually ?

Please advise to clear this error.

Hi there, I'm really in on pressure to configure Alert on MD3220i, please help me so I'm in rush. what I did so far:

I setup virtual mail server (include gmail account, it works fine I can send out test email) on my 2012 R2 server which is connected to SAN (just one volume)

I put different format of the mail server (server IP address, domain name, server name, Blank),  on Mail Server field, I don't know what format should I use. also put sender email address as I setup on virtual mail server and recipient email address too. depend on what name I put on Mail Server name I get different error like:

ServerName --> Validation unsuccessful. Input stream checking SMTP return code....

myVirtualMailServerName --> The mail (SMTP) server you specified can not be found ....

smtp.gmail.com --> Validation Unsuccessful . Incorrect return code from smtp command. ...

please help me to fix this one

thanks a lot

Degraded Virtual Disk message shown on md1200

Hi,

I noticed a message this weekend stating a 'Predictive Drive Failure' on my md1200. I decided to be proactive and replace the drive, however now I have a 'Degraded Virtual Disk' message.

When replacing the disk I just simple performed a physical swap as I know they are hot swapable. I have not performed any other action. The recovery guru states to reinsert the old physical disk, but I am afraid that old data will now write to my array. My smcli is not opening for some reason to perform a manual update. Please assist. Thanks for your assistance.

MD1000 Replaced Drive into separate controller

We have a customer with a 25TB R5 array (I know its bad, don't ask, inherited) on an MD1000, drive 14 went out, we replaced with exact brand and model, firmware is very close. Most are 0001, and there are a few SN03 and SN04, this new one in question is SN04.

When we replaced the drive it initialized on the same controller, then a few minutes later it put the drive into the Connector 1, when the rest of the array is in Connector 0.  Disk Shows Green in the separate Connector, but we still have an amber light on the drive, and it looks like the drive has a ton of activity.

With seeing varing results I am scared to pull it and try another brand new drive, also being it is R5.  Drive was replaced 3 weeks ago, so the rebuild should have been done by now.

Thoughts? HELP!

Expanding a PV MD3600F+MD1200 with a MD1220

Hi all!

We are in a process of expanding our MD3600f SAN and I have a few questions about this expansion i hope someone can clarify a bit for me.

Todays setup are one MD3600f + MD1200 running with redundant Brocade 300 switches and attached to 7-8 Vmware PE610 servers. These arrays are fully loaded with 600GB 15K SAS drives in RAID5 with 1-2 Hotspares. This adds up to 9,22TB usesable storage for our VM hosts. This is our enterprise storage, and we also have a MD3000i with 1 attached MD1200 also in RAID5 for a lower grade storage such as documents, and other low IO data.

We are now in the process of replacing these VM hosts and are moving over to Hyper-V with a mix between storage spaces direct and the existing SAN. Reducing the amount of VM/Hyper-V hosts to 2-3.
In order to expand i'm adding a extra MD1220 starting with 10 pcs 1,2GB SAS 10K drives, and 1 HS. Attached to the Md3600f controllers. The idea is to setup the new volume in RAID10. This should give me aprox 6TB of usable data. I'm also considering adding some SATA SSDs for a new and fast volume. Will SATA SSDs be faster then the SAS drives, and if so any idea how much? SAS SSD are way to expensive at the moment but our new Hyper-V hosts comes with the ability to expand with 24x 12gbps disks in each host.

Should i expect a performance decrease when adding a second MD12XX to the SAN?

My questions is also regards the mix between SSD's and SAS drives. Should i buy a upgraded licence for the array and use the internal cache allowing the whole array to use the cache, or should i add it as a virtual disk and allow the VM/HyperV hosts access it? I.e adding OS drives to the SSD volume and data volums to a slower storage?

If choosing the internal solution, should the SSD's be seated in the 3600 or the 1220 array? My suspicion is that i will get a better result if they are located closest to the controllers...? Is it also recommended to have about 10% cache? Is this 10% of all disks added, or 10% of the RAID10 volume?

Do i need SSD's for both the 3600, 1200 and the 1220? Same question goes for the license upgrade, do i need to upgrade the license for all arrays?

Can i change the RAID level on the 3600 from 5 to 10 without dataloss, or do i need to move all my VMs over to different volume and re-configure the VD on the 3600?

When adding the new 1220 array with a 1,2GB (2,5 inch) hotspare, will this one also cover the other arrays with the 600GB 15K SAS drives?

Do anyone know how bit a performance boost i will get after moving over to RAID10 on both arrays?

All tips are deeply appriciated!

Cheers
Reidar

vSAN/Dell Support Question

$

Hi All

I am currently in the process of putting together a spec for a 3-node vSAN. I have a couple of questions regarding Dell support for the hardware.

I have a spare R730XD in stock from a previous purchase. My plan is to purchase from Dell 2 more R730XDs with RAID/HDD/SSD on the vSAN HCL. They are in fact part of this ready node configuration however; I will be using different processor/RAM quantity and different NICs. For the existing R730 chassis that I have, I will purchase the components (the same as the other 2).

One of my supplier quoting for this has thrown a spanner in the works and pointing out the following:

  1. Because I am not using a vSAN ready node configuration, Although RAID/SSD/HDD are on the vSAN HCL, Dell won’t ‘fully’ support the configuration. I am not sure what this means and they were vague. They made it sound as though hardware vendors will not support vSAN configs that deviate from the ready node configs.
  2. Using the existing 730XD chassis may also not be supported by Dell because it was not purchased as a vSAN ready node – Maybe something to with firmware.

My understanding is that as longs as applicable hardware is on the vSAN HCL then you are OK, as Dell will support the hardware as it is purchased from them. Is anyone able to verify these 2 points?

Many thanks

Storage MD3200i one controller not booting, can't access

Hi

I have 2 controllers, 1 works with access to the <CTRL> <BRK> interface since the other one stopped after an attempt to update the firmware by my client (I think he tried to update).

When connecting the serial cable, the first controller starts normally, but the second one stops at the next point below.

Even giving: <CTRL> <BRK> and then S, nothing counts. (But I think that this command would not solve the problem, because I saw the good controller, that max it does and set ip interface and change password)

Is there any special command, or some way to upload a firmware to it via TFTP or something?

If you can help me with this problem, I'm really in need of it.

Hello,

Need a little help configuring our DR 4100 for SNMP monitoring by Solar Winds.  I configured the alerts on the CLI and added the management node, community string, and SNMP port but it still fails.  I have searched everywhere and in every possible menu on the web interface as well as the CLI in an PuTTY session.

Thank you for your time.

Hello Guys,

I have two Host groups, one is linked to VMware server and another to Windows server.

I need to move the Windows server host to be under the VMware host group so I can access it from VMware.

What are the prerequisites for this, and how this can be done?

I have a little experience in SAN storage, so please provide as much details as possible :)

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

2. Storage Center License - Asynchronous Replication (Unlimited)
3. Storage Manager Configuration
4. Storage Manager Communication - iscsI connection
